Where the friction is
The context window is the catch: about 9k on the free plan. Paying $12.99 a month multiplies it by five. Either way it is a window, so a long conversation still sheds its own beginning — the character forgets the start of the evening by the end of it.
Their own model needs no key. Reaching for a different one is where the setup starts: an account with a model provider, a key pasted into settings, and a second bill of roughly $5 to $50 a month. Plenty of people are happy with that. Plenty of others would rather the choice were just there.

Frontier models, no key required
Claude, Gemini and Grok are included in the plan. There is nothing to paste in, no provider account to open, and no separate bill that scales with how much you use it. Pick a model in settings and send a message.
You can still choose: cheaper fast models for long roleplay, stronger ones for scenes you care about, and the choice is per conversation rather than global.
Memory that outlives the context window
Janitor's paid tier sells memory, and what it sells is five times the context. That genuinely helps, and it still forgets — a window that is five times larger takes five times longer to fill, then drops the oldest messages exactly as before, and remembers nothing at all from a different chat.
SognoAI saves durable facts and re-injects them into later conversations. Start a new chat with the same character a month later and it still knows who you are.
What you give up
Bring-your-own-key. If you already have a provider account and like controlling exactly which model runs and what it costs, that control is real and we do not offer it. Their character library is far larger than ours too — though characters travel as Tavern cards, so anything you have as a .png or .json comes with you.
Questions
Do I need an API key?
No — and to be fair, you do not need one for Janitor's own model either. The difference is the model list: Claude, Gemini and Grok are included here, where on Janitor those require your own API access.
How does the cost compare?
Janitor is free on its own model, with no key needed. If you want a different model the cost is whatever your provider charges, commonly $5 to $50 a month. Janitor+ is $12.99/month for more context; SognoAI starts at $9/month with models included. Janitor adds tax on top of that; our $9 is what you are charged.
Is adult content allowed?
Yes, for verified adults, as on Janitor. Age confirmation is required first.
What about reliability?
We do not queue paid users behind free ones. If a model provider has an outage we will say so rather than leave you guessing.
