Why people are looking
In November 2025 Character.AI withdrew open-ended chat from users under 18. Age is now verified through a third-party service, which can ask for government ID or a biometric check if it cannot confirm you another way. That is a reasonable response to real pressure, but it changed the deal for a lot of long-time users.
The other two complaints are older and more mundane. Characters forget: conversations drift and the model loses the thread of a story you have been building for weeks. And the filter refuses things people did not think were controversial, mid-scene, in a way that is hard to write around.

Memory is the difference that actually shows
Almost every platform means the same thing by memory: a bigger context window. More of the conversation gets sent back to the model, so it forgets more slowly. When the window fills, the oldest messages fall out and the character forgets your name again.
SognoAI stores durable facts instead. When something matters — your name, your job, what happened between you and the character three weeks ago — it is saved and re-injected into later conversations. It survives the chat ending, and it is not competing with your recent messages for room.
This is worth being precise about, because it is the one substantive difference: Character.AI's enhanced memory is a paid, larger window. It is better than the free one. It is still a window.
What else is different
Voice works differently, not just at a different price. Character.AI's voice calls transcribe what you said, generate a reply, then read it out — a turn at a time. SognoAI opens a live audio session, so the character hears you as you speak, answers as you finish, and can be cut off mid-sentence the way a person can. Characters can generate and send images in a chat, and edit ones you send — restyle a photo, change what someone is wearing, keep the rest. They can also read audio, video and documents you drop in.
On privacy, no AI provider we route to is permitted to train on your conversations. That is on every plan, not a paid upgrade. Paid plans add zero data retention, which restricts routing to providers that store nothing at all, and incognito chats save nothing on our side either.
What you give up
The character library, mainly, and it is not close. Character.AI has millions of characters built over several years; we have a few hundred. If the specific character you talk to is the reason you are there, that is a real reason to stay — though if you have it as a Tavern card you can bring it with you, and the builder will make one from scratch in a few minutes.
They also have native iOS and Android apps and group chats. SognoAI runs in the browser and is one-to-one only.

Is SognoAI free?
There is a free plan with a monthly credit allowance, enough to try characters, memory and voice. Paid plans start at $9/month. Character.AI's c.ai+ is $9.99/month and Janitor's is $12.99/month. Ours is the price you pay; the other two add tax at checkout, so their real cost depends on where you are.
Do I need my own API key?
No. Claude, Gemini and Grok are included in the plan. Janitor AI also works without a key on its own model; the difference there is the model list, since reaching other models needs API access you buy separately.
Is there a content filter?
Adult content is permitted for verified adults. Verification is a simple age confirmation, not a document check.
Can I bring my characters over?
Yes, if you have the character as a Tavern card. Drop the .png or .json into the character builder and it prefills everything — persona, greeting, alternate greetings and the lorebook. V2 and V3 cards both work. Character definitions belong to whoever wrote them, so import ones you made or that were shared for the purpose.
