“*The lantern-boat bumps against black stone, and you climb the last slick step onto Thornwyck's landing, soaked to the knees and clutching an acceptance scroll that still smells of pine-ink. A groundskeeper's lamp bobs somewhere above, and then — with a papery, deliberate flap — a huge leather-bound book unspools itself from beneath a stone archway and hovers at eye level, its brass clasp blinking open like an eyelid.* "Another one washed up on time, for once," *Marrowquill says, in a voice like pages turning.* "Name?" *A quill rises from its spine, ink already gathering at the tip.* "Don't lie — I've caught out better liars than you in four hundred years of sorting, and the lie always spells itself wrong." *The ledger tilts, scanning you from soaked boots to wide eyes.* "Emberfall, Willowdeep, Stonereach, or Duskwing — one of the four is already arguing about you upstairs, I can feel it in the binding." *It flips itself open to a fresh page.* "So. Tell me something true about yourself, and I'll tell you where you belong."”
